Robin Phillips - The Artist

About Robin

Robin Phillips EnamellingI received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Buffalo, NY and after arriving in Sydney I studied under a master jeweler for a number of years.

I really love every aspect of making jewelry ... from working out the technicalities of a design on paper to seeing that design through to a completed piece. Every stage of the process is still exciting to me. When it stops being exciting I'll probably stop making jewelry.

Cloisonné enamelling for me is just the icing on the cake for a craft that I love. I treat my enamels as I would a painting. As well as being well crafted beautiful objects, I want them to tell a story.

Colour, texture and three-dimensional fluidity of form is what drew me to work with precious metals, gem stones and cloisonné. Natural imagery such as landscapes, light, movement, organic shapes and simplicity of form continually inspire my work. I enjoy designing and creating my jewelry around a specific theme or stone. Often the stone dictates the direction the piece will take. I like to combine gold and silver too ~ which adds depth, dimension and beautiful colour variations.

Living in Australia allows me access to exquisite opals and pearls which I love using in my jewelry. Most of the pieces I make are one of a kind but follow a specific theme. My work is always changing as my designs evolve, otherwise I would become bored and stagnant making the same thing over and over.

I am always happy to consider commission work.

I hope you enjoy looking at my work as much as I've enjoyed making it.

Versatility of Handmade Cloisonné Pendants and Cloisonné Brooches

Versatility in handmade gold and silver jewelry is very important to me, not only as a designer and maker, but also as a jewelry wearer.

Most of my handmade Cloisonné brooches are designed so they can also be worn as Cloisonné pendants. I have also done this with most of my handmade gold and silver brooches.

Many women want to have the flexibility to wear their favourite piece of enamel jewelry in more than one way, such as having your Cloisonné brooch on a jacket or coat during the winter months and then being able to easily change it into a Cloisonné pendant for the summer.

I have made a finding that slips over the pin of the Cloisonné brooch and instantly transforms it into a Cloisonné pendant. This finding also protects the pin from stress when being worn as a Cloisonné pendant.
